November is Diabetes Awareness Month. Diabetic patients can prove to be a challenge for the general dental practitioner. This presentation by a specialist periodontist and oral medicine specialist will cover a number of issues the practitioner may face when treating diabetic patients.
About the Presenters:
Dr Jane McCarthy has maintained a private specialist practice in Applecross for over 20 years. She has presented many times for UWA and ADA, Diabetes Educators Association, Singapore and Sri Lankan Orthodontic Societies and for Unconventional Conventions.
Jane is passionate about everything to do with periodontics and her special interests include all aspects of the relationship between oral health and systemic diseases, periodontal disease treatment and in particular in diabetes, gingival recession, periodontal plastic surgery and pre-orthodontic surgery. She places implants and treats peri implantitis as well.
Jane is a Member of the Royal College of Dental Surgeons in Periodontics, a Member of the Pierre Fauchard Academy and the American Academy of Periodontology and is a Fellow of the International College of Dentists.
Dr Janina Christoforou is an Oral Medicine Specialist who practices all facets of oral medicine. She has undertaken her specialty training in WA with an externship at Brigham and Womens Hospital in Boston. She is in specialist private practice in West Perth and Kalamunda. She devotes time to clinical teaching, research and lecturing at the University of Western Australia. She is a member of the Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital multidisciplinary Head and Neck cancer clinic and has a public placement in radiation oncology. Janina also volunteers her time working with organisations to provide oral medicine services to those disadvantaged in the community. Her special interests include prevention and management of oral cancer and its sequelae, mucosal diseases and orofacial pain. Janina is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons and a Fellow of the Oral Medicine Academy of Australasia.
