WA Rural Health Excellence Awards
Congratulations to Dr Kathryn Braysich, who was named Allied Professional of the Year at the 2026 WA Rural Health Excellence Awards.
Dr Kathryn Braysich has a long history of providing care for rural communities.
“My first job was with DHS based in Meekatharra but also providing a service to Wiluna, Mt Magnet, Cue and Sandstone in a mobile van, I worked for DHS for two years,” Kathryn recalls.
“After that I worked on Groote Eylandt in the NT for 18 months, which involved going to several communities on the island and occasionally flying to the mainland of East Arnhem to communities there.
“I then worked in Wongan Hills in Wheatbelt WA for three years and moved to Geraldton in 1998.”
Kathryn did a brief locum stint at Carnarvon Aboriginal Service, before buying a Practice in Geraldton in 2002, where she worked for 20 years.
“Since I sold my Practice, I have been working as a locum in several places including Arnhem Land in the NT, Broome, Derby, Kununurra and Geraldton with DHS, also one year with Geraldton Aboriginal Medical Service and supervising dental students at JCU in Cairns and supervising UWA dental students in Geraldton,” she says.
Kathryn says she enjoys the challenges and the autonomy of working rurally – adding the rewards of working rurally are the satisfaction of being able to provide a much-needed service to a rural community and the recognition and gratitude that community gives you.
To dentists considering working rurally, Kathryn says to go for it. “There are many opportunities for a dentist working rurally and you get to become part of a wonderful community,” she says.
She said she was very honoured to have been recognised for her work in rural and remote areas.Congratulations Dr Braysich!
