In the lead-up to his course, we caught up with Dr Vivian Mascarenhas.

Dr Vivian Mascarenhas started out in a computer and mathematics degree, before quickly realising he wanted to be as far away from computers as possible. “Having realised that I wanted to work with my hands as well as my head, I did a couple of weeks work experience at a dental practice and I was hooked,” he recalls.

Vivan went onto complete a post graduate qualification in Dental Sedation. “It was really born out of necessity as I used to do a lot of surgical and non-surgical dental work under IV sedation and I was really dissatisfied with what services were available at that time,” he explains.

As an AHPRA endorsed dental sedationist, Vivian will be sharing his expertise when he presents: ‘Anxiolysis and Relative Analgesia (N2O) in Modern Dental Practice’ in September, which is a hands-on course to teach participants how to deliver nitrous oxide in a clinical setting.

All participants will have the opportunity to administer and experience the full range of effects of relative analgesia using nitrous oxide-oxygen, and after completing the course, will feel confident in setting up and administering this agent.

Topics include

  • The basis of pain and anxiety
  • Review of basic life support, and
  • The utilisation of nitrous oxide sedation

Vivian says attendees can expect a solid understanding of why, when and most importantly how, to effectively use inhalation sedation in their daily clinical practice, an that anyone who doesn’t feel completely at ease with using this highly useful and cost-effective treatment modality should attend.

“(I hope attendees take away) daily practical advise on how to use this very safe highly efficacious treatment adjunct to make the clinicians life and their patients’ lives easier,” Vivian says.

“As with any procedure or intervention there are always advantages and disadvantages,” Vivian adds. “The skill is being able to recognise in what situations and with which patients the use of Relative Analgesia will work well. This course will prepare clinicians to be able to make that call and easily implement Relative Analgesia in their daily clinical lives.”

Dr Vivian Mascarenhas will be presenting ‘Anxiolysis and Relative Analgesia (N2O) in Modern Dental Practice’ on Saturday September 5 at OHCWA. To book your spot, visit our website, cpd.adawa.com.au
