The festive season is a time for fun but can also be hard on your teeth. The Australian Dental Association of Western Australia’s President, Dr Tim Crofts, gives some advice about keeping your teeth healthy.
Eat cheese after a meal
Believe it or not, eating some cheese after a meal can be beneficial for your oral health. “Cheese contains large amounts of calcium and phosphates, which strengthen your enamel,” Tim says. “Cheese also boosts your saliva production, which helps to neutralise acids.”
So, if you are thinking of indulging in a little cheese these holidays, go ahead – your teeth will thank you!
Limit consummation of sugary drinks
Sugary drinks are a popular beverage over the holiday season; however, they can also be damaging to your teeth. “Soft drinks contain high sugar, which can lead to tooth decay,” Tim says. “Tap water is always the best choice for your teeth! If you are drinking sugary drinks, use a straw to minimise the drink’s contact with your teeth.”
Give non-food gifts
Gifting sugary foods is not a good choice for your teeth. “Think outside the box when gift giving – you don’t need to reach for a box of chocolates for a gift,” Tim suggests. “Books or vouchers for experiences are great gifts as they are fun, and will not damage your teeth.”
Gift fun toothbrushes to children
Don’t add more lollies to the kids’ stockings – you can give a gift that makes toothbrushing fun! “Choosing a new toothbrush with your child’s favourite character on them will be a great stocking stuffer that will also make brushing fun,” Tim says.
Book your dentist appointment for the new year
Start 2026 off right by booking an appointment with your dentist. “If you are due for a checkup, make sure you book an appointment with your dentist in the new year,” Tim says. “It is important to have regular appointments with your dentist to ensure your teeth are healthy year-round.”
